Supporting Employee Board Leadership
Board leadership is the fastest growing employee volunteering program in the US. At Spur Impact, we support board leadership through our Spur Leaders Network (Formerly known as the Emerging Leaders Community) and programs offered, such as the Get on Board: Spur Service one-day event, happening on Thursday, May 15th at Goldey-Beacom College. Through these initiatives, employees can be connected to nonprofit organizations and equip themselves with the tools needed to be a board member.
If interested in making a real impact in your community by serving on a nonprofit board, the Spur Leaders Network and the Get on Board program is a great opportunity for you. Through the program, you can be matched with nonprofits to join their boards. Not only will you be matched with a nonprofit, you will be provided with the training and given the skillsets from expert leaders to serve on a board and make a difference. Members are matched based on needs, interest, and expertise.
More training can be accessed at workshops held throughout the month. These workshops can help those interested in acting as a board member leverage their skills to their fullest potential. These workshops review how to fundraise, act as a leader, utilize social media, and more. Training can be especially helpful if you are coming from a work environment that is not a nonprofit! Although the training may be for the purpose of becoming a better board member, the skills taught can be transferred to any professional field.
As for employers, various ways exist to support employees as they become board members of nonprofit organizations. Often the motive to join a board is to become a more active member of their community and support a cause they are passionate about. It is a great opportunity to contribute expertise and demonstrate leadership. Employees have higher levels of engagement, retention, and sense of purpose through work when engaging in board service.
Here are some ways in which employers can support board leadership:
Paid Volunteer Time Off: With PVTO, employees could take the time to participate in activities related to being a board member. This includes participating in meetings, fundraising, and attending events.
Flexible Scheduling: With flexible schedules, an employee can attend board meetings and events held throughout the work week. This could look like offering a hybrid schedule or a time to complete the hours outside of the traditional work schedule.
Connecting to Valuable Resources: Employees expressing interest in participating in board leadership can be redirected to Spur Impact! We will directly connect them to ways in which they can become more involved.
Looking to make a social impact as a board member? Whether you are an employer looking to provide resources or an employee looking to get connected, Spur Impact has resources for those interested in board leadership. Through the Spur Leaders Network and the Get on Board Program, you will be well on your way to making a difference in your community.
There is still time to register for our Get on Board: Spur Service Program to start your nonprofit board service journey this month and beyond!
