Leading with Purpose: How Kelly Scanlan Is Championing Change for Local Children
From Fundraising to Frontline Impact
When it comes to Kelly Scanlan, her commitment to improving the community is evident through both her nonprofit work and her dedication to child enrichment. While her professional role centers largely on fundraising—a critical component of societal advancement—Scanlan sought a more hands-on way to make a difference in Delaware’s local communities.
In 2024, she joined Spur Leaders Network (SLN), formerly known as Emerging Leaders Community (ELC), which connected her with a nonprofit that aligned seamlessly with both her interests and expertise. “I have been passionate about increasing access to post-secondary education for many years,” Scanlan said. “Being a board member for Delaware Futures allows me to continue supporting the educational aspirations of students in Delaware.”
Redefining Who Belongs on a Board
Although Scanlan initially worried about being judged because of her age, she quickly realized that Spur Impact actively encourages emerging leaders to engage through SLN. “As someone who was once a younger professional who feared people wouldn’t want me on a board, I appreciate that Spur Impact is working to support nonprofits in recruiting the next generation of board members,” she explained. “I know this generation has a lot of great ideas to support nonprofits, and Spur Impact is leading the way in Delaware to make sure that happens.”
Through the SLN cohort, Scanlan outlined her skill set and goals while gaining essential training to become an effective board member. At the same time, Spur Impact worked to identify a nonprofit that matched her passion. This process ultimately brought Scanlan and Delaware Futures together—an outcome that has benefited both.
Guidance That Makes a Difference
Scanlan also noted how seamlessly SLN fit into her life and praised the program’s supportive and accommodating structure. “Prior to being involved with SLN, I had already had a great experience with Spur Impact, particularly through Do More 24 Delaware,” she said. “Jennifer Saienni has always been an incredible resource, willing to jump on a Zoom call to brainstorm ways to improve fundraising and social media outreach or answer any questions I had.”
Due to those positive experiences, Scanlan felt confident enrolling in SLN. “When I received the email about the program, I knew it was being run by an organization I trust,” she reflected. “The program gave me both the push to join a board and the support needed to make that connection. It was something I wanted to do, but I didn’t know how to find the right organization or determine whether my experience aligned with their needs.”

About the Spur Leaders Network
Launched in 2023, the Spur Leaders Network, an initiative of Spur Impact, connects nonprofits with prepared, mission-driven leaders ready to serve and make an impact. The program supports nonprofits seeking skilled board members while helping professionals grow personally and professionally through service. Through training, peer learning, and thoughtful matching, participants build the skills, confidence, and connections needed to lead effectively. Nonprofits gain access to emerging and experienced leaders who can contribute right away and over the long term. Together, this work is helping build a more connected, inclusive, and resilient nonprofit community across Delaware.
