Leading with Purpose: Joe Carriero’s Path to Community Impact Through Board Service
For Joe Carriero, leadership is rooted in mission, collaboration, and a genuine desire to contribute to meaningful work in the community. Through Spur Impact’s Spur Leaders Network (SLN), Joe has been able to engage with organizations whose values align with his own, while gaining hands-on experience in board and committee service.
Joe currently serves as an Advisory Board Member for Sunset Bridge Corporation and as a Planning Committee Member for Teach Children to Save Day, an initiative run through the Delaware Bankers Association (DBA). Each role offers a unique opportunity to support organizations at different stages of growth and impact.
Supporting a Mission in Its Earliest Stages
Sunset Bridge Corporation is still in its early phase, with a focus on fundraising, acquiring permits, and beginning construction on a facility in Bethany Beach. Once complete, the facility will support families transitioning through end-of-life care for a loved one, offering a calm, welcoming environment where families can spend quality time together and determine next steps without the pressures of the outside world.
As an advisory board member, Joe attends board meetings where the team discusses startup strategy and organizational direction. He contributes expertise as needed and stays engaged as the organization builds its foundation. While the advisory board currently has a lighter operational workload, Joe remains interested in identifying additional ways to support the organization as it continues to grow and evolve.
Promoting Financial Literacy Across Delaware
In addition to his board service, Joe serves on the planning committee for Teach Children to Save Day, a statewide financial literacy program coordinated through the Delaware Bankers Association (DBA). The DBA represents the collective interests of the financial services industry in Delaware and provides members with a forum to exchange industry information and support a safe and viable financial services ecosystem.
Teach Children to Save Day brings volunteers from financial institutions into schools across the state to deliver financial literacy lessons through an engaging comic book format. While the comic’s theme changes each year, the core mission remains consistent: introducing children to financial literacy concepts at an early age. Through the planning committee, Joe participates in planning sessions and encourages colleagues from his bank to get involved in the event in whatever capacity they are able.
Drawn to Mission and Community
Joe chose to get involved with both organizations primarily because of their missions, as well as the positive energy and camaraderie present within each team. Being surrounded by individuals who are actively working to make a difference in their communities serves as a strong source of motivation and inspiration.
Finding the Right Pathway Through Spur Impact
Joe’s connection to Spur Impact began more than four years ago through the #MillSummit now Spur Impact Leadership Summit. His involvement deepened when Director of Nonprofit Engagement, Jennifer Saienni encouraged him to join the Emerging Leaders Cohort (ELC) now Spur Leaders Network. After learning more about the program, Joe saw it as a strong opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who shared a common goal of making an impact in the community.
“Once I learned more about the ELC, I knew it would be a great way to connect with like-minded individuals who shared the same goal of making an impact in the community,” Joe shared. “I had high expectations going into the program, and it did not disappoint. I made valuable connections throughout the program and was able to connect with two great organizations.”
Through ELC, Joe built valuable relationships and was connected to two organizations that aligned with his interests and values. The experience met his expectations and provided meaningful pathways into board and committee service.
As Joe continues his involvement with Sunset Bridge Corporation and the Delaware Bankers Association, his leadership journey reflects the power of mission-driven engagement, thoughtful collaboration, and the opportunities that emerge when emerging leaders are connected to the right networks.
